BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Cumberland’s men came up short in their bid for a repeat Mid-South Conference tennis title last Friday, falling 4-1 to No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson in the MSC Championships.
The Phoenix battled early but dropped the doubles point. Gabriel Godoy and Elisey Kalashnikov fell 6-3 on court two, while Vitor Ferreira and Julian Parada dropped a tight 7-6 (7-4) decision at the top spot to seal the point for Lindsey Wilson. Paul-Daniel Meyer and Daniel Wessels picked up a 7-5 win on court three, but it wasn’t enough to secure the point.
In singles, Cumberland’s lone win came from Vitor Ferreira, who was impressive on court two with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over German Delcanto, giving the Phoenix their only point of the day.
Daniel Wessels lost 6-4, 6-2 at the top singles spot, while Hassan Ammar dropped his match at No. 3, falling 6-3, 6-4. Julian Parada also came up short on court six, losing 6-3, 6-4.
Two matches went unfinished as play was halted after Lindsey Wilson clinched. Paul-Daniel Meyer had won his first set 6-3 and was leading 6-5 in the second when the match was stopped. Gabriel Godoy was also ahead at No. 5 singles, winning the first set 6-3 and tied 5-5 in the second.
Cumberland now awaits a bid to the NAIA Championships.
