Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett announced two Wilson County high schools received the Anne Dallas Dudley Gold Award for meeting student voter registration thresholds.
Mt. Juliet Christian Academy and Friendship Christian School were among the 60 high schools in Tennessee to earn the Gold Level award.
Since 2021, the Anne Dallas Dudley Awards incentivized Tennessee students who will be 18 or older on or before the next election to register to vote. Schools registering 100% of eligible students earn the Gold Level award. Those registering 85% earn the Silver Level.
Hargett spoke at both schools and gave recognition to student ambassadors for their initiative.
鈥淵ou get the opportunity to pick the candidates you vote for or against that either mirror your values,鈥 Hargett said at Mt. Juliet Christian Academy. 鈥淥r if you vote against them that oppose your values.鈥
鈥淭hat鈥檚 something that no one can take away from you,鈥 Hargett added. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l also notice that as you become regular voters, that a lot of the issues that people are talking about may not be the most important issues to you, and there鈥檚 a reason why they don鈥檛 talk about [those issues].鈥
Hargett is referring to the fact that the worst voter turnout of any demographic are those in the 18-25 age group.
鈥淭hey talk a lot about the issues that affect people more like my age that are 55 and up, because we鈥檙e more regular voters,鈥 Hargett said. 鈥淪o if you want candidates to start talking about issues you think are more important, then you need to be regular voters and make them earn your vote.鈥
The Anne Dallas Dudley Award is named in honor of the suffragist who helped lead the effort to get the 19th Amendment of the Constitution ratified nationwide. Tennessee was the 36th and final state needed to pass the amendment which gave women the right to vote.
This marks the second time MJCA earned the Gold Level award.
鈥淚鈥檓 excited about schools like this and hope that others can learn from their example,鈥 Hargett said.
All public, charter, private and home school associates are eligible to participate in the Anne Dallas Dudley Award program.
