The weeds stood tall on the property once well maintained by past generations of family members. The dilapidated barn was now infested with all kinds of vermin. The family’s former cabin showed significant structural deterioration. The windows were damaged, displaying clear signs of both vandalism and unauthorized entry. Termites and weather completely destroyed the front porch.
Upon examining the scene through the fractured glass, I observed remnants of previous furnishings and photographs. Faded wallpaper from another era clung to the drooping walls. The old floorboards were damaged and unstable. I remembered walking on them long ago. I recall segments of weekend conversations spanning over five decades. Most of the people involved have since passed away.
Almost in a trance, I recalled my childhood when my maternal grandfather inherited his family's property. The folklore, history and legacy of the Welsh settlers in Granville, Ohio, deeply influenced me. The land they once homesteaded now belongs to unrelated owners. As a descendant, I felt disregarded. I wonder what my ancestors would think.
It was a heart-wrenching scene, forever imbedded into the recesses of my memory. Upon returning to my vehicle, I reflected on how such a significant family landmark could have been left abandoned and neglected. The neglect and decomposition occurred gradually rather than suddenly. Someone chose to abandon their responsibility and leave.
Similarly, numerous individuals are in urgent need of support for their emotional and psychological well-being. Soul care means consistently caring for your body, mind, and spirit in a holistic way.
There are times in our lives when we are weary and heavily laden with a load of care. Those times when we have become overwhelmed with the loss of a loved one, the catastrophic health diagnosis of a parent, or the loss of a job. Darkness is overtaking us, leaving us too weak to go on. Time alone does not heal discouragement, depression, or despair. Giving up must not be an option. If you have suicidal thoughts, call the national crisis line at 988, option 1.
Assistance from a certified counselor is necessary. Whether we have succumbed to the blues or have been diagnosed with clinical depression, we must seek relief from qualified caregivers. Our mental health is critical and must not be neglected.
Sometimes, you may feel spiritually dry, distant from God, or uncertain about your faith. Consider seeking guidance from a trusted pastor or spiritual mentor during these times. The house of God, with uplifting music and spiritual nourishment, is essential for spiritual growth. The valleys of life are dark and unsettling. Taking a sabbatical can be a way to support personal well-being and spiritual health.
Furthermore, there are instances when our health deteriorates, and we experience discomfort. We need a doctor. Regular checkups, a balanced diet, sufficient vitamins, rest, sleep, and exercise all promote health and wellness.
If the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of an individual are not attended to, it is unlikely that their situation will improve without intervention. No, it will steadily decline and deteriorate, much like an old log cabin.
Daily self-care is essential for good health, so don't neglect your body. While aging and mortality are unavoidable, we should focus on maintaining quality of life.
Regular care could have preserved the old cabin.
