The Lafayette City Council July 22 discussed increasing the minimum lot size of R-2 properties in the city.
R-2 allows for a variety of residential builds, such as single family, duplexes, townhouses and apartments.
Ordinance 870 would increase the minimum lot size of R-2 properties with sewer from 6,000 to 9,000 square feet.
鈥淲here did they come up with these figures?鈥 Councilman Dale Hix asked.
Mayor Tony Day said, 鈥淪cott and the others with the planning commission did.鈥
Hix said, 鈥淚f that鈥檚 what you all want to do, that is fine, but that is 50% wider and that鈥檚 where the money is in a subdivision. Going up 3,000 square feet in a lot will give a lot more size and depth per lot but I feel maybe going up to 8,000 instead of 9,000 would be more reasonable. I hate to see a 50% increase in anything.鈥
Hix went on to explain the downfalls with such an increase in lot size at one time.
鈥淚n developing any property and cutting up into R-2 lots you will always go with the minimum lot width anytime you can,鈥 Hix said. 鈥淚t has been 6,000 for as long as I can remember. Going up to 9,000 would only allow for two lots per every 180 feet. That is cutting out a lot of money from the new subdivisions.鈥
Councilman Jason Phelps said, 鈥淭hat also means less tax revenue.鈥
Hix said, 鈥淚 feel that one of our best natural resources in the county is our real estate. I can see both sides of this, but ultimately it is whatever you all want to do.鈥
The ordinance was sent to the city council鈥檚 next meeting for final decision on raising the square feet from 6,000 to 8,000.
Council members also discussed that the area where Days Road was repaired, next to the Lafayette city pool, should be paved within the next two to three weeks.
Abe Gaskins asked the City of Lafayette to extend the renting of the hangar at the Lafayette Airport at the rate of $500 per month. The city agreed to raise the rate to $1,500 for the next five years. The stipulation also includes that if Airvac decides to use the facility that they purchase their fuel from the airport.
Some individuals have also proposed changing the direction on Haley Street to one-way. City councilmen decided that as far as they could remember that although it is a narrow street that there has not been an accident reported. They decided to keep the street traffic directions as they have been.
