Once a Purple Tiger, always a Purple Tiger.
Former Watertown running back Brannon Hill is returning to his alma mater as head softball coach, he announced on social media Thursday.
Hill spent last season as a softball assistant at Siegel after a run on Savannah Sanders鈥 staff at Green Hill, where he was the first-base coach on the Lady Hawks鈥 2023 state championship team.
He takes over for Sarah Gentry, who stepped down at the end of last season for family reasons after guiding the Lady Purple Tigers to their first-ever state tournament victory and a 19-14 record. But Hill said the Lady Tigers won鈥檛 be resting on their laurels.
鈥淚 hope to bring a fresh new look, a fresh new face, a whole new culture they鈥檙e probably not going to be used to,鈥 said Hill, a 2013 WHS graduate who also played center field for E.J. Wood鈥檚 Purple Tiger baseball team. 鈥淐oming from MTSU and coming from working with Sanders at Green Hill, it鈥檚 all business. There鈥檚 fun but also work and taking care of what鈥檚 yours and I鈥檓 just excited to get these girls with a whole new system.
鈥淚鈥檝e been working hard on the field the past month and there鈥檚 a night-and-day difference if you were to ever come up there and look at it. At the end of the day, I just want to bring success and continued success for these girls and community.鈥
After graduating from Watertown, Hill went to Middle Tennessee State where he ran the outfield drills for Coach Jeff Breeden. One of the MTSU players was Kirstyn Reed, who鈥檚 now the Siegel coach who asked Hill to help her at the Rutherford County school this past season.
鈥淚 got familiar with wanting to be a coach and (Breeden) kind of pushed me and led me in that direction,鈥 Hill said. 鈥淚 thought it was really fun and really enjoyed the game of softball, and that鈥檚 where I fell in love with it.鈥
鈥淗e鈥檚 been part of successful programs and seeing what that鈥檚 about,鈥 WHS principal Darian Brown said yesterday. 鈥淎nytime you can go back and find somebody that鈥檚 been part of a program that鈥檚 had the success that Green Hill鈥檚 had and be able to bring that to your program and to bring somebody home.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 huge when you can bring home a person who鈥檚 graduated from here. We talk to our kids all the time about once you leave this place you can always come back home. You鈥檒l always be part of the Purple Tiger family. Anytime you can bring someone from the past back home it鈥檚 good for your school, good for your community.鈥
Brown praised Gentry for what her teams accomplished at her alma mater.
鈥淪arah鈥檚 done a tremendous job with the program and the way she ended this past year in the state tournament, it was a great way for her to go out,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut what she鈥檚 done for the program is just tremendous.
鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to build on what Sarah鈥檚 started.鈥
Hill announced plans to have tryouts from 5-7 p.m. July 28 at the field. He said he regrets the late notice but that it was necessary as he wasn鈥檛 cleared to be hired until noon Thursday.
